making music

Image
When we were little, one of the things that was part of our lives was music. My mom has played clarinet since middle or high school. We all took piano lessons (some by desire, others by force). We sang in church choirs and as part of the Remington Colt Singers. The radio was almost always on. We want music to be part of Lincoln's life, too. We sing to him often, and play music some but not enough. So tonight we sat down at the piano together. He dove right in!

Five months

Lincoln, Five months! This month we have seen you start to assert your independence, especially when it comes to eating and taking bottles. It's clear that you already want to be sooo big. I think we're in for it! We started you on solids right at four months. You've had rice cereal, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, applesauce, carrots, squash, and peaches. You hated carrots - threw them up the first night, then choked on them the second. You might have just overeaten on night one and then gagged at the memory on night two, but we're putting them on the back burner for a while anyway. Everything else has gone down well; sweet potatoes and peaches are definitely your favorite so far! You are convinced that you should be the one to hold the spoon, which makes mealtime very, very messy. You can sit with very little support now. It won't be long before you're doing it on your own! When we put you on your tummy, you usually roll right over to your back but aren...

a boy & his dog

Jazzy came along long before Lincoln. For two long years, she was the center of attention on the average after-work evening. We were understandably nervous about how she would do when Lincoln was born. In the beginning, she was very curious. From there, she went to protective. Now she is mildly entertained. Lincoln, on the other hand, is more than mildly entertained. He is absolutely delighted by his puppy. He loves when she licks him. He loves when she chews her bone. He reached for her with both hands before either of us. I'm pretty sure his first crawls and steps will be toward her, if this adoration continues. He looks for her when he hears her bark. He loves to just sit and watch her watching him... or watch her ignoring him. It really doesn't matter. It is already so much fun to watch this little boy and "his" dog! We'll see how things go when he gets a little older and more mobile.

Lincoln Jesse

A long, long time ago, I promised to share the story behind Lincoln's name. It's not an super sentimental or fascinating one, but I think it's kind of fun. I felt so much pressure naming a child. It seems like such an important task, choosing a name . (I happen to think there's a lot to a name, even though Juliet would argue otherwise.) It's so strange to think of the discussion and thought that we put into this decision now, when "Lincoln Jesse" seems so right for our little boy. Lincoln comes from a baseball game. Yes, that's right. One night (after I had gone to bed, during my 8 p.m. pregnancy bedtime days - not to be confused with my 9 p.m. motherhood bedtime days), Brad was creating a player on MLB The Show. While scrolling down the list of names, he happened on "Lincoln." He decided to have the name "Lincoln Kohlman" announced, since the game will do that for you. It sounded good, so he threw the name out there for me ...

*sigh*

I've been meaning to blog this week, just about life. But life got in the way. I started my new job on Monday. And it has been good (more on that later). But after work there is a baby to pick up and feed and play with, bottles and diapers to wash (the bottles take more effort than the diapers), a screaming baby to comfort at bedtime (though not tonight), a house to (not) clean, and a dear husband to sit on the couch and stare into space with. I mean, I haven't even taken a picture of the kid this week, which might be a "first" in his life... So the blog takes a back seat, and rightfully so. I'm still around. I'll be back here soon, but it might be just with the big stuff.

Root, Root, Root for the ROYALS!

Saturday, July 20th was Lincoln's first Royals game. We went with our friends, Adam and Jill . Lincoln did pretty well for a four-month-old. He liked walking around the stadium, seeing the fountains and the hall of fame, and hanging out in the breastfeeding room. He was not a big fan of the loud and sudden cheering.
