May Day!
When I was a kid, every May 1 my mom would orchestrate our own little May Day celebration. We would make baskets (often out of the green plastic baskets that strawberries used to come in), fill them with flowers from the garden, and deliver them to our neighbors... driving miles to do so since neighbors are few and far between in the country.
This year, Lincoln was old enough and we finally lived in a neighborhood where delivery would be easy, so on April 30, Lincoln and I made some paper May baskets. Unfortunately, we didn't have any flowers blooming (I don't think there are any planted in our yard at all), so I picked some up at the store the next day. After school, all four of us walked down our street, delivering May baskets. Lincoln and I would go up to the door, leave the basket, ring the bell, and "run away." Of course, we often didn't get too far since there weren't many places to hide - and Lincoln was excited to move on to the next house.
The best part about this was that we finally met several of our neighbors! It was great to spread some cheer and start to get to know a few new people.
The next day, when I was picking Lincoln up from school, an elderly man came to the house to say thank you for the flowers. He was tearing up a bit as he told Brad that we could never know how much that meant. A few days later, when Lincoln, Lawrence, and I were on a walk, we ran into that same man and he said the same thing to us. It was so special to show Lincoln how a small, even fun, gesture can make someone else's day so much better!
