Summer Reading Update 2

My second summer reading update - just as thrilling as the first. I'm now finished with the list of William Allen White nominees. In fact, my list of books to read is getting pretty darn short.

Couldn't put it down
Nickel and Dimed by Ehrenreich (surprisingly, since it is nonfiction...)
The Rest of her Life by Moriarty  (thanks to sister Hannah for this suggestion - great book by a KS author)
The Stormchasers by Blum
Diamonds in the Shadow by Cooney
Shine by Myracle
All the Broken Pieces by Burg (WAW)
The Great Death by Smelcer (WAW)
Return to Sender by Alvarez (WAW)
The Amaranth Enchantment by Berry (WAW) (cute ending)
Sing You Home by Picoult
Double Eagle by Collard (WAW)
Heart of a Shepherd by Parry (WAW)
The Center of Everything by Moriarty

Very good reads
Faith, Hope, & Ivy June by Naylor (WAW)
Anything But Typical by Baskin (WAW)
Operation Yes by Holmes (WAW)
My Name is Phillis Wheatley by Cooper (WAW)
Notes from the Dog by Paulsen (WAW)
Wild Things by Carmichael (WAW) (I wasn't too into the chapters from the cat's PoV, but other than that it was great.)
Scat by Hiaasen (WAW)

Was okay
Phoenix Rising by Hesse
Confetti Girl by Lopez (WAW)
Years of Dust by Marrin (WAW) (not bad - nonfiction)
The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg by Philbrick (WAW) (better than I thought it would be!)

Should have abandoned it
Peace Like a River by Enger

Did abandon it
n/a... yet

Yet to read (in no particular order):

Perfect Match by Picoult? (I'm not sure if I've read this one or not)
1984 by Orwell
If I Stay by Forman
The Mysterious Benedict Society by Stewart
anything by Shusterman

*WAW = William Allen White award nominees for 2011-2012

I loved Scat...I read it with my third graders and they ate it up. You'll enjoy The Mysterious Benedict Society...great characters. I believe there are 3 in the series. Happy Reading!

Great list! After you read If I Stay you need to read Where She Went. One of my favorite Shusterman books is Unwind.

Ooh! I am glad I found you! I am going to "share" your list, if you don't mind! :) I was excited to see that a few I am looking forward to are on your "Couldn't Put It Down" list! Yay!

SOL: Caught

Image
Every once in a while, I try to take a purposeful break from blogging, for a day or a week or an indeterminate amount of time. Sometimes it's to focus on other things. Sometimes it's simply to get work done. But mostly, it's because I get caught. I catch myself checking my blog "stats" to see how many people are reading. I catch myself wishing I had more followers... after all, "they" have 20, and I only have 11. I catch myself coveting more comments from readers. So when I catch myself, I try to make myself take a break. (I don't always listen.) Because I don't blog for the attention (although I have to admit it's been a nice side effect). I don't blog so that others read me. I blog... well... okay. I never thought much about why I blog. I suppose it started as one of those "if they can, I can." I did it just to do it. But it's more than that now. (I just realized this yesterday.) I blog to be a writer. I have alwa...

Give away!

Image
Well, faithful blog readers, I've decided it's time. Time for a give away. I've mentioned a few times before that I am getting carried away with this headband stuff. You'd think I was stocking an etsy store or something. (Which I'm not. I'd have to think of a name that doesn't suck. I'm not creative like that. And I'd have to ship things in a timely manner... my sister's birthday present (from August 31st) is still on my piano. I gave my other sister her present last Tuesday when I saw her in person. My name is Megan, and I have  a problem with getting to the post office.) So I need to give some away. To win a headband of your choice (I will post a picture with all the options when I announce the winner), comment on this post by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21... tell me how you found my blog or ask me a question or tell me a random fact. For an additional entry, "follow" my blog publicly by clicking the "join thi...

Lincoln Jesse Kohlman: Birth Story

Image
I am starting to write this post on Monday morning. It might take a while. While my entire pregnancy was blissfully uneventful, a fact for which I am eternally grateful, Lincoln's birth was anything but. This is going to be a difficult story to record (I'm already tearing up with this first paragraph), but I think it will start to help me heal emotionally. Warning: this post is not censored. It includes pretty much everything I can remember, just so you know in advance.  At 37 weeks, Dr. Fullerton sent me in for a measurement ultrasound. I had been measuring small since about 30 weeks, so we just wanted to check on the due date. Surprisingly, Baby K was measuring in the 89th percentile. This was a concern because, let's face it, my body is not exactly built for child-bearing. These hips are narrow. We, after a long conversation with the doctor, decided on the 13th that our induction would start the evening of the 21st. We told our parents and siblings and that was abo...
